The world of nutrition can be very confusing. There’s always a new diet being promoted, chatter about superfoods, anti-inflammatory foods, probiotic foods….and the list goes on. With all this overwhelm, it’s hard to know what you should actually do to help improve your health. However, there’s one thing I tell every client no matter what illness they have – and that’s to DRINK MORE WATER! It sounds simple and trivial, but don’t under estimate the importance of water.
If you have IBS – drink more water, diabetes – drink more water, constipation – drink more water, eczema – drink more water…you get the point. You should aim to drink between 2-2.5 liters of filtered water per day.
Tips to help you increase your water intake:
Buy a water bottle you really like - it makes all the difference
Set a goal to drink a certain amount of water by a specific time (ie. drink one liter by lunch time)
Infuse your water for extra flavor (ie. cucumber, lemon and basil are freshing)
Take your water to bed with you – sexy times! Put a glass of water on your night stand so when you wake up in the morning you can drink a glass straight away. This will help to improve your digestion as well.
Place the jug of water on the kitchen counter or somewhere in plain sights as a reminder to fill-up your glass/bottle.
Herbal teas – now that it’s cold outside brew up a big pot of herbal tea and sip on that throughout the day. If you live in a warm climate, chill the tea down and add a little honey to it – fancy!
Benefits of drinking more water:
Helps maintain the balance of body fluids – think balanced blood pressure
Helps remove waste and toxins
Helps maintain normal bowel function - adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation.
Could aid in weight loss – hunger is disguised as thirst
Can help prevent headaches
Helps protect our joints and cartilage – water helps the cartilage around our joints stay lubricated
